Why I Love Art Therapy

Written by Devi Fongers, LMSW, MAAT

I love art therapy for the way it  breaks down barriers faced in traditional talk therapy. Art making encourages expression of strong emotions that are difficult to put into words. Because it can be used with any age group, I love using it. It is especially helpful for those who have experienced trauma. Additionally, art therapy is inclusive. You don’t have to be “good” at art to benefit from its many advantages. Art therapy is not about the end product. The therapy is about the process of making art. This can make sessions more relaxing and enjoyable.  But, that’s not all. Research is uncovering exciting proof of the benefits of art therapy.

Benefits include:

  1. Releasing dopamine that can reduce depression
  2. Providing a safe outlet to express and manage pain filled emotions
  3. Offering a sense of control over your life
  4. Getting to know and appreciate yourself more
  5. Enabling you to find your strengths and face your weaknesses
  6. Reducing anxiety by creating a sense of calm as you remain grounded in the present
  7. Strengthening attachments through mutual art making
  8. Gaining new insights through the art making process
  9. Overcoming barriers that keep you from reaching your goals
  10. Healing from traumatic memories

I practiced for fifteen years as a Licensed Social Worker. Then I returned to school for two years to become a Licensed Art Therapist. I love how art therapy transform lives in powerful and sometimes unexpected ways. I currently work primarily with women ages 14 through 80.  Many of my adult clients report that the process of art therapy (guided by a trained professional)  is different than traditional talk therapy. As a result, they state the benefit is multifaceted  over a shorter period of time.  I encourage you to schedule an appointment to experience the benefits of art therapy today. I think that you, too, will love art therapy.

Devi is a LMSW and MAAT. She loves change, learning, adventure, and challenges. Devi says “I  love a God who knows this about me and continues to lead me through impractical adventures with seemingly insurmountable challenges. When I listen and follow He  graciously uses and transforms my mistakes and wanderings into a better version of me. This, in turn, informs my work as a therapist and enables me to  humbly journey with others looking for direction, freedom, and rest. ” Learn more about her here.
